Developing a Winning Mentality: The Event

The second edition of the MBK Events series took place at the prestigious and historic Santa Anita racetrack on October 21st. The event's theme, "Developing a Winning Mentality," followed the initial gathering at Cafe Amici in Beverly Hills, where participants delved into the theme of "From Plates to Possibilities."

Originally envisioned by a group of investors led by Hollywood luminaries, including Hal Roach and Al Jolson, the 1934 construction of Santa Anita Racetrack stands as a testament to the vision and ambition of its founders. This iconic venue, steeped in rich history, served as the perfect backdrop for the MBK "Developing Winning Mentality" event, seamlessly blending the allure of tradition with the contemporary energy of the gathering.

The event welcomed three key speakers: Paul Mwangi, the king of government contracting whose two companies have been acquired by Fortune 500 entities; Simon Wright, elected in 2022 to serve as a Member of the Covina-Valley Unified School District; and Dr. Enock Kariuki, one of America's most sought-after Biotech executives. Notable figures like former Chelsea FC and Ajax FC soccer star Mario Melchiot and Ambassador Consul General Ted Kwaka were also present.

As the event unfolded against the backdrop of the racetrack's grandeur, the sight of the majestic horses on the track for the first time evoked a sense of wonder.

During his talk on the Power of "NO," Mario Melchiot shared a powerful story of his initial refusal to join the Dutch national team as requested by Marco Van Basten, which led to a productive conversation about his role within the team, ultimately earning him the trust to become the National team captain.

Dr. Kariuki, having witnessed four companies grow from start-ups to acquisitions worth more than $7 billion, attributed much of his success to his mother's influence, emphasizing the significance of surrounding oneself with the right mentors who can recognize one's potential and guide them to greater heights.

Paul Mwangi emotionally recounted his near-loss of everything during the 2008 economic crisis, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing family as the bedrock of one's support during challenging times.

Simon Wright noted that family is a vital part of one's journey to success as they provide genuine feedback for self-improvement. He highlighted his wife as his hero, acknowledging her hard work and commitment to the family, providing him with one less thing to worry about.

All the speakers agreed that success has no singular definition. Dr. Kariuki offered that success, to him, means optionality - having the power to do whatever he wants at any point in time. Mr. Mwangi and Mr. Wright observed that each day's victory should be seen as that day's victory, and the next day should be viewed as a new opportunity to pursue another victory.

The event drew guests from out of state and even from overseas, contributing to the diverse and enriching atmosphere. Strangers evolved into friends, aspiring entrepreneurs found mentors and accomplished individuals embraced the chance to give back, fostering a sense of community and mutual growth.
