Benson Mwangi: I am Living My Childhood Dreams

Dreams are the children of an idle mind, begot of nothing but vain fantasy,” uttered William Shakespeare. These words find meaning when you examine the journey of Benson Mwangi.

In his early years, Benson aspired to do business, inspired by his mother’s successful hustling as a nurse and his father’s career in banking, which prompted his interest in the corporate world. However, deep down, Benson’s true desire was to become a pilot. After a few years in Kariobangi South, his family moved to Buruburu, bringing him closer to the Military base in Eastleigh. Together with his friends, he often trekked to the base to witness the thrilling takeoffs and landings of military planes, igniting his passion for aviation.

Unfortunately, Benson’s comfortable lifestyle led him astray, causing him to overlook the immense efforts his parents exerted to secure a better life for him and his four sisters . His circle of friends at the time lacked inspiration, leaving him directionless.

A pivotal event that shook Benson to his core occurred when his best friend John passed away in his sleep at the age of 19, triggering a profound awakening within him. Sensing the need for a change in environment, his parents facilitated his relocation to Britain, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance before continuing to attain a Master’s degree in Scotland.

Upon completing his studies, Benson returned to Kenya, initially interning at Donald B Kipkorir’s office before transitioning through several jobs, ultimately securing a position in Bermuda. Serendipity played a role when a friend in Bermuda introduced him to a hedge fund company, leading to an opportunity in the tax haven. He later shifted to the oil and gas industry, securing a job in Dubai, where he spent several years, experiencing love and heartbreak.

His work in Dubai granted him the opportunity to extensively travel the world, fueling his passion for exploration. In 2013, Benson was headhunted by the US company Forever 21 and relocated to America to oversee the implementation of a crucial technological component. Simultaneously, he actively pursued his long-neglected dream of becoming a pilot.

Life came full circle for Benson; he moved his mother to tears when he took her on an aerial tour of Southern California, landing in Santa Barbara for lunch, a moment she considered a testament to divine intervention.

In recent years, Benson has established himself as a technology expert, pivoting from his childhood aspirations. His childhood dream of being a pilot has transformed into a cherished hobby. He currently works as a technology consultant, collaborating with renowned companies in America.

Today, Benson has traveled to over 50 countries and aims to expand his journey to 100. He is an integral part of the MBK Group, dedicated to helping Africans in the Diaspora forge connections beyond their usual social circles while enjoying themselves. The group’s inaugural event took place at the prestigious Cafe Amici in Beverly Hills, with their upcoming gathering scheduled at the esteemed Santa Anita racetrack this Saturday.

The MBK events commenced when Benson flew Kevin and myself for breakfast in San Diego. It was inspiring to witness Benson, with joy on his face, showcasing that indeed dreams come true with determination and hard wor
